Wolf Vostell appropriated the term “Décollage” from the Nouveaux Réalistes, who used the word to describe their artistic practice of re-using wall posters as artworks by ripping them and exhibiting them as social documents of a certain urban archaeology. Since 1963, Vostell staged a number of happenings, which he described as “décollage”, since the works consisted of television images that had been “unstuck” (dé-collé) from the screen and re-presented as art.
