Realm is an installation made of a 16mm film surrounded by different sound sequences. First of all, the physical and constant sound of the 16mm projector and its looper are self-evident manifestations of the mechanical process of projecting analogue images. The three different audio tracks bring us to imaginary places that sometimes sound domestic or, in other cases, distant. The link between what we hear and what we see is rather uncertain because the footage shows a multilayered yet not completely abstract picture. In the film, we distinguish an interior on which colour stains outline disparate furnitures, human figures, as well as Persian handwritings, are sometimes recognizable, unknown faces stand out from the lightless background. In this way, Laurent Van Lancker plunges us into a stream of thoughts and perceptions that invokes what is at the same time familiar and exotic, domestic and foreign.
