Krieg und Frieden (War and Peace) is the third omnibus film by Alexander Kluge, after Deutschland im Herbst (1978) and Der Kandidat (1980). Krieg und Frieden deals with the NATO military build-up with middle-range missiles (Pershing II), Cruise missiles and neutron bombs which could have potentially annihilated Central Europe. 300,000 protesters in Bonn. German Chancellor Schmidt resigns. At the peak of the Cold War, the film employs means of fiction and documentation and talks about war and armament, disarmament and peace. Why make a film collage about war? As Kluge said: “Nothing is more discouraging than not being able to see through a game on which your life hinges".
