Jayce Salloum & Walid Raad, Talaeen a junuub / Up to the south (1993)

Made in the early 1990s, Talaeen a junuub / Up to the South by Jayce Salloum & Walid Raad examines forms of resistance (and their consequences) to the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon alongside the (mis)representation of these issues in the West. With a considerable number of interviews, including with members of former resistance movements, the documentary discusses the relationship between economic and social issues, offering a close reading of the dynamics between occupier and occupied and of varying conceptions of the ‘land’. The defining and underlying thread of the film is the self-awareness of the filmmakers, understanding that their own film, however critical, isn’t spared but in fact manufactured and moulded to their own ideas and representations.
